Snapdragon 888 specifications and features revealed

Qualcomm unveiled its new Snapdragon 888 chipset couple of days ago. It’s developed on 5nm process with next generation architecture. The first devices with the 888 will be out in Q1 of next year and Samsung Galaxy S21 is expected to the first one. Realme ‘Race’, Red Magic 6, Oppo Find X3 are some of the upcoming devices with Snapdragon 888 Soc.


The Snapdragon 888 is the first chip to come with the powerful Cortex-X1 clocked at 2.84GHz along with a cluster of three Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.4GHz and four A55 cores running at 1.8GHz. The X1 when Compared to the A78 can execute 33% more instructions per clock, has double the SIMD hardware and the capacity of the L1 and L2 caches has been doubled as well. It is also equipped with 4 MB of L3 cache and 3 MB of System cache.

Coming to GPU, the Snapdragon 888 is equipped with Adreno 660 which claims to have 35% faster rendering performance and 20% better power efficiency. Its mainly targeted to get high frame rate at game and aims to bring 144fps ( Frames per second ) . It also uses AI and other image processing features to improve the image or graphic quality. The Snapdragon 888 delivers Variable Rate Shading (VRS) for the first time to mobile devices. This VRS improves the speed of image rendering by 30%. Along with Qualcomm Game Quick Touch it gives 20% more responsiveness thus reducing the latency to a greater extent. The Adreno 660 supports 10-bit HDR and sub-pixel rendering.

Snapdragon 888 sees a biggest improvement in the AI department. The 6th generation AI Engine combines the new Hexagon 780 and the GPU’s number-crunching power to deliver 26 TOPS . Performance per Watt has increased by up to 3x thus increasing the power and power efficiency. This is also enhanced by 2nd generation Qualcomm Sensing Hub, which is used for for simple applications like lift and activity detection and listening for wake up words. Also, the new Qualcomm AI Engine Direct software will provide developers the flexibility to run their next generation on-device AI-powered apps at full-throttle.

“Snapdragon 888 includes many security measures for keeping on-device user data private including Qualcomm® Secure Processing Unit, Qualcomm® Trusted Execution Environment, and support for Qualcomm® Wireless Edge Services ” states Qualcomm. Snapdragon 888 has a new Type-1 Hypervisor, which provides a new way to secure and isolate data between apps and multiple operating systems on the same device. Also, it is the first mobile chipset to comply with the Content Authenticity Initiative standard. It can capture cryptographically-sealed photos, which include tamper-resistant metadata that proves an image is authentic.

Snapdragon 888 gives the mobile professional quality cameras to the mobile devices. It features the new Qualcomm Spectra 580 ISP which is the first to have Triple Image Signal Processor (ISP). This allows us to process three separate camera streams simultaneously, which has multiple uses. For one, it can handle three 4K HDR video streams or capture three 28MP photos at the same time. Also the switch between the cameras would be much smoother since each camera has its own ISP. The Spectra 580 ISP also has a new technology low light, which gives brighter photos, even in near darkness. Also included is photo capture in 10-bit color depth in the HEIF format – so you can capture photos in over a billion shades of color. Coming to video, the new chipset can capture and play 4K videos at 120fps, so it can make the best of a high-resolution 4K display.
